This year’s fair runs from Sunday 3 until Wednesday 13 June 2012 and plans are already in place within South Lakeland. The team dealing with the arrangements is a sub group of the Local Area Partnership for Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale. Representatives include South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Police, local county and district councillors and community representatives.

A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) in South Lakeland will be in place from 4 May 2012 (at the latest), and you will see work starting in late April. The TRO will be enforceable once the signage is in place and any Highways issues should be directed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The key facts about the TRO are:

  • They do not restrict horses or horse drawn caravans

  • They apply to key areas only and not all verges and temporary stopping places

  • They apply to motor vehicles and caravans only

From 4 May 2012, Cumbria Police and the district councils will operate a Combined Action Team (CAT) prior to Appleby Horse Fair. The purpose of this team is to visit and assess all encampments which develop.

Temporary stopping places in South Lakeland include:
Middleton Common, Sedbergh
Devil's Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale
Rawthey Bridge, Sedbergh
Scrogg Bank, Sedbergh
