Kirkby Lonsdale and District Civic Society

Kirkby Lonsdale and District Civic Society

Kirkby Lonsdale and District Civic Society was established in 1972, following a successful campaign to stop the demolition of a large part of Queen's Square for development.

Kirkby Lonsdale has an extremely distinguished architectural quality and practically the whole town centre is now a Conservation Area.

The Society's remit covers Kirkby Lonsdale and its wider Rainbow parish, which includes Barbon, Casterton, Hutton Roof, Lupton, Mansergh, Middleton and Preston Patrick.

Its aims include:

  • promoting high standards of planning and architecture
  • preserving and conserving and where possible developing those things which make the area special
  • encouraging interest and pride in the area

What we do

  • Review all Planning Applications submitted to the local authority.  If in our view an application contributes positively to the character of the area by virtue of design, materials or location we will give our support.  If we consider it is harmful to the character of the area  we will comment accordingly,  suggesting changes or objecting to planning permission being granted.
  • Encourage interest in the area by arranging public illustrated talks on subjects of local and historical interest
  • Contribute towards the practical preservation of historical structures
  • Place interpretation panels at points in the town highlighting the history of particular buildings etc
  • Organise occasional more detailed lecture series on particular topics
  • Produce a quarterly members' newsletter
