Beginners Drawing & Painting: Portraiture – Focus on Faces

Discover the basics of drawing and painting faces in this beginner-friendly course, looking at facial proportions, expressions, feature studies, shading, and colour techniques.
You’ll explore facial anatomy, learn how light and shadow add depth, and experiment with colour mixing for realistic skin tones—all in a supportive, step-by-step environment tailored for beginners. Perfect for those just starting their creative journey, this course will guide you towards creating your very first portrait.
This is a six week course, held every Wednesday in Kirkby Lonsdale Library, between 10am and 12pm starting Wednesday 7 January. It’s led by Amy Jane Hardy, our fully qualified Arts & Crafts tutor.
How will the course be delivered?
This course will be delivered face to face by our amazing Art tutor Amy. There will be a mixture of tutor demonstration, discussion and hands-on creative activities to help you develop your skills and confidence.
What do I need to bring?
All equipment will be provided, but if you have good quality pencils, pens, or paints, feel free to bring these with you.
What are the entry requirements?
This class is suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience; all you need is a passion for portraiture and a creative mindset.

How well am I doing?
You will be taught by Amy our highly qualified art tutor. Throughout the course she will give you feedback and encouragement. You will also complete an Individual Progress Report (IPR) to track your progress.
