Place Names, Landscape & Society in the Medieval North West England

By Dr Alan Crosby
Study Day with Kirkby Lonsdale & District Civic Society
Place-names are everywhere, one of the fundamental frameworks of our everyday existence and in constant use by all of us all the time. But how often do we stop and think about them – what do they mean, how old are they, who invented them?
Come with us as we journey from Arnulf’s headland to the wolf valley, via the beaver stream!
We explore the place-names of North West England (and especially south Westmorland and north Lancashire) and discover what place-names reveal about medieval society.
Dr Alan Crosby is a freelance local and regional historian, writer, editor and lecturer, working mainly in the North West. Alan has delivered a number of impressive talks to our society and we hope you can join us for this year’s event.
