We’re facing challenges that require creative solutions at a global\, national and local level. It feels like a tipping point\, but also an opportunity to reflect\, regroup and recalibrate our approach. \nWe believe that big ideas can come from anywhere. Our small market town has inspired artists\, writers\, philosophers and activists through the ages – including John Ruskin\, JMW Turner\, Margaret Llewelyn Davies (campaigner for women’s suffrage) and the Brontë sisters. \nWe’d like to see Kirkby Lonsdale celebrated for more than its abundant natural beauty and we’re excited to see what fresh ideas we can inspire and explore! Join us for a series of events – a mixture of performances\, workshops\, experiences\, conversations\, panel discussions\, films and installations – held in a variety of venues across town.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner el_class=”page-illuminate-header-image” width=”1/2″ css=”.vc_custom_1763219280026{background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}”][vc_single_image image=”4984″ img_size=”full” css=””][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”page-illuminate-experience-header”][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Events + Experiences” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” css=””][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”page-illuminate-experience”][vc_column width=”1/2″ el_class=”page-illuminate-experience-text”][vc_column_text css=””] \nPerformance\nOne of the themes of Illuminate is ‘The Creative Response’. SUMMARY:Pride & Prejudice
DESCRIPTION:This summer we welcome Illyria once again to our unique outdoor venue with their wonderful and witty alfresco production of Pride & Prejudice. \nAdapted by Oliver Gray from Jane Austen’s novel\, Pride & Prejudice is the original – and best – romcom. Independent-minded Lizzy finds disdainful Mr Darcy detestable! Or does she…? Can she see beyond his pride – and could he overcome her prejudice – to consider a possible future together? Hi-jinks ensue. \nWith her tongue firmly in her cheek\, Jane Austen tells us “It is a truth universally acknowledged\, that a single man in possession of a good fortune\, must be in want of a wife.” Mrs Bennet certainly thinks so. So when Mr Bingley – single\, young\, handsome\, and with £5000 a year – moves into nearby Netherfield Park\, she devotes all her energy to contriving for Jane\, the eldest of her five daughters\, to meet him during rural Hertfordshire’s whirlwind of social balls. But even Mrs Bennet draws the line at Mr Bingley’s disdainful friend Mr Darcy despite his whopping £10\,000 a year. Thank heavens Lizzy\, her second daughter\, finds him detestable too! Or does she…? Can she see beyond his pride – and could he overcome her prejudice – to consider a possible future together? \nAward-winning theatre company Illyria returns to celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday in sparkling style. \nIf you joined us last year for Illyria’s production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet\, you’ll appreciate just how special these open-air shows are. We’re particularly blessed here at St Mary’s as our Glebe performance space not only offers a quiet and sheltered spot for picnic and a show but also provides an unparalleled vantage point from which to admire Ruskin’s View. \n***The show starts at 6PM but gates open at 5PM for picnicking – it’s the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday\, as afternoon melts into evening and you wander home in the fading light.*** \nBring a folding chair or blanket as well as a picnic – and please dress for the weather. Last year we had a lovely sunny evening so suncream\, sun hats and insect repellent were the order of the day\, but you might need a fleece and a cagoule! \nTickets are limited and last year people travelled from a distance to see Illyria’s performance. This year\, Keswick\, Keighley and Brampton are the next nearest locations to us\, so we’re anticipating high demand. Please book soon so we can organise stewarding. \nPrices\nAdults £18.00\nChildren (11–17) £10.00\nChildren (U11) FREE\nRegistered Carer FREE \nBooking\nBook online → \nGates open at 5pm. Performance begins 6pm. All tickets carry a small booking fee shown at time of purchase.

SUMMARY:Miss Nobodies
DESCRIPTION:Miss Nobodies is a funny\, uplifting play about a little ironmongers shop in a little Lancashire town and the larger-than-life women who pass through it from 1919 to the present day. \nMixing storytelling with sketches\, songs and poetry\, Ruth Cockburn and Keith Carter (the creative talent behind last year’s hilarious ‘Devilled Eggs’ show) take you through 100 years of retail therapy and stories; the talkie movies of the ‘20s and the video nasties of the 80’s\, the start of 50’s Skiffle and the birth of 90’s Britpop\, class struggles in the ‘60’s and racial tension in the ‘70’s. \nPlaying a host of characters\, from the tragic to the comical to the lyrical and the animal\, their stories\, sketches\, songs and verse\, (there’s even a prize-winning competition in the interval)\, will have you laughing\, crying and singing up to the present day. \nThis funny\, poignant and heart-warming story will resonate with all ages and will make you think about what the next 100 years will hold for us. Miss Nobodies was inspired by outreach done online and in the community of Great Harwood alongside research into local history and prominent figures of Lancashire. One such person is Ethel Carnie Holdsworth. A writer that worked in the mills in the early part of the last century. She is cited as the first working class\, female novelist in the UK and parts of her poetry are used throughout the play to punctuate the stories. The show mixes poetry\, storytelling and music\, to tell the story of a local shop spanning 100 years from 1919 to present day\, focusing on the women that have made up the shop’s history\, whilst also showing how the lives of women have changed over the last century. \nBlack Liver\, as heard on BBC Radio 4\, seen on BBC 1 and Sky TV have toured all over the world. They bring their unique style of theatre-making and comedy to connect to their audience and bring stories to life. \n\nNominated for best new show 2022 Buxton Fringe\n‘Iconic’ Forgotten Arts Fest\n‘Highly Recommended’ Buxton Fringe\n\nAudience Reactions\n‘Miss Nobodies – ordinary women\, living extraordinary lives and superbly told this evening. A privilege to have seen this performance. Thought provoking and enjoyable.’ \n‘Loved the show. It really took us on a humorous and emotive journey. Through a familiar history of any Lancashire small town girl.’ \n‘What a wonderful breath of fresh air. Loved this storyline and the way the humour was woven in.’ \nPrices\nAdults £14.00\nU18s £10.00 \nBooking\nBook online → \nDoors open at 6.45pm. Performance begins 7.30pm. Pop-up bar available. All tickets carry a small booking fee shown at time of purchase.

SUMMARY:Steel
DESCRIPTION:A town-wide treasure hunt for a million quid of lost railway is led by the wild hearts of two teenage boys in Steel\, a punchy\, high octane new play by Lee Mattinson set in post-industrial West Cumbria. \nSteel is set in Workington\, once rich with coal seams and ore\, carnivals and community\, where James and Kamran have been mates for over a decade. They are fed up with feeling different\, and at seventeen\, they’d like the world to be theirs – but Workington feels like a ghost town. Unemployment is double the national average\, and ‘lasses drink Bacardi by the pint and boys don’t cry’. \nA strange phone call from ‘Lynn from London’ summons James and Kamran to meet her in a local cafe. She informs James that he’s heir to ‘one theoretical mile’ of the British Railway System\, secured in 1903 by his Great-Great-Great-Grandfather. Lynn explains that if James can deliver the contract proving this in time\, he will receive a million pounds. And so the town-wide treasure hunt for the lost contract begins in a flurry of remarkable wild characters\, hidden histories and brave first love. \n“…a real tribute to the spirit of Workington and should be treasured…”\nNorthern Arts Review \n‘Steel’ is commissioned and produced by Theatre by the Lake (TBTL)\, and directed by TBTL Artistic Director Liz Stevenson. \nTickets\n£12 per person \nBooking\nBook online → \nOr by call Matt on 07531 143762 \nContent warning: This show includes strong language\, descriptions of violence\, sex\, homophobia and racism. Suitable for ages 14+ \nDue to the size of the performance space\, ticket numbers will be limited\, so buy early to avoid disappointment! \nPresented with the generous help of Highlights Rural Touring Scheme

SUMMARY:Diary of a Nobody
DESCRIPTION:Mr Pooter is a man of modest ambitions\, content with his ordinary life. Yet he always seems to be troubled by disagreeable tradesmen\, impertinent young office clerks and wayward friends\, not to mention his devil-may-care son Lupin with his unsuitable choice of bride. Try as he might\, he cannot avoid life’s embarrassing mishaps. \nBased on an 1892 novel by brothers George and Weedon Grossmith\, the bumbling Pooter has become an enduring comic character in a book that delivers a searing satire on the snobberies of middle-class suburbia – one which also sends up late Victorian crazes for spiritualism and bicycling\, as well as the fashion for publishing diaries by anybody and everybody. \nThis one-man show\, brought to you by theatre group ‘Don’t Go Into the Cellar’ and starring award-winning actor and writer Jonathan Goodwin promises to be a highlight of St Mary’s SS25 season. \n“Don’t go into the Cellar never disappoint. Over the last few years they have brought a range of productions to our theatre and all have been well received. Jonathan always throws his heart and soul in to the show. He is a wonderful actor and storyteller and is able to bring every character alive.” The Heron Theatre\, Milnthorpe. \n“It’s always a pleasure to work with Don’t Go into the Cellar. Their innovative\, compelling performances always sell out and delight our audiences.”\nLeeds Library Bar \nPrice\nAdults £12.00\nU18 £8.00 \nBooking\nBook online → \nDoors open at 6.45pm. Performance begins 7.30pm. All tickets carry a small booking fee shown at time of purchase.
