SUMMARY:Ruddigore
DESCRIPTION:by Gilbert & Sullivan\nPerformed by The Hornby Occasionals\nRuddigore\, or The Witches Curse\, is the tenth comic opera by Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert and debuted in January 1887. \nSet in the Cornish fishing village of Rederrin\, where a witches curse has been placed on the Baronets of Ruddigore which forces them to commit a crime every day. Each previous Baronet has tired of the curse and died in agony. To escape his fate the genuine Baronet\, Ruthven Murgatroyd\, has absconded leaving his younger brother Despard to inherit the title and curse. \nMeanwhile Ruthven\, masquerading as Robin Oakapple\, has been courting Rose\, a young girl from the village. However\, Robin’s extreme shyness prevents him from asking her hand in marriage when his foster-brother\, Richard arrives and offers to help. Unfortunately he inadvertently asks for Roses hand in marriage and she accepts! The engagment is short-lived and Rose calls it off. Richard informs Sir Despard that his elder brother is still alive\, which comes as great relief to the Baronet. Sir Despard has been commiting his crimes early in the morning in order to do good works for the rest of the day in order to make up and the opportunity to be released from the curse is too strong. \nThe new baronet reluctantly takes up residence in the castle\, but will he be able to keep the ancestral ghosts happy who want him to commit ever worse deeds? Will he ever marry Rose? Will Despard be able to atone for his years of crime? Will the curse ever be lifted from the Murgatroyds? \nOnly Gilbert and Sullivan could conjure such a story and blend music\, humour and delight in this classic piece of topsy-turvy light opera! \nThe Hornby Occasionals are a NODA award-winning operatic society which has been performing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas since 1983. \nTickets \nAdult £14.00\nU18 £7.00 \nBooking \nBook online → \nPlease note there is a small booking fee for online bookings. SUMMARY:Diary of a Nobody
DESCRIPTION:Mr Pooter is a man of modest ambitions\, content with his ordinary life. Yet he always seems to be troubled by disagreeable tradesmen\, impertinent young office clerks and wayward friends\, not to mention his devil-may-care son Lupin with his unsuitable choice of bride. Try as he might\, he cannot avoid life’s embarrassing mishaps. \nBased on an 1892 novel by brothers George and Weedon Grossmith\, the bumbling Pooter has become an enduring comic character in a book that delivers a searing satire on the snobberies of middle-class suburbia – one which also sends up late Victorian crazes for spiritualism and bicycling\, as well as the fashion for publishing diaries by anybody and everybody. \nThis one-man show\, brought to you by theatre group ‘Don’t Go Into the Cellar’ and starring award-winning actor and writer Jonathan Goodwin promises to be a highlight of St Mary’s SS25 season. \n“Don’t go into the Cellar never disappoint. Over the last few years they have brought a range of productions to our theatre and all have been well received. Jonathan always throws his heart and soul in to the show. He is a wonderful actor and storyteller and is able to bring every character alive.” The Heron Theatre\, Milnthorpe. \n“It’s always a pleasure to work with Don’t Go into the Cellar. Their innovative\, compelling performances always sell out and delight our audiences.”\nLeeds Library Bar \nPrice\nAdults £12.00\nU18 £8.00 \nBooking\nBook online → \nDoors open at 6.45pm. Performance begins 7.30pm. All tickets carry a small booking fee shown at time of purchase.

SUMMARY:Place Names\, Landscape & Society in the Medieval North West England
DESCRIPTION:By Dr Alan Crosby\nStudy Day with Kirkby Lonsdale & District Civic Society \nPlace-names are everywhere\, one of the fundamental frameworks of our everyday existence and in constant use by all of us all the time. But how often do we stop and think about them – what do they mean\, how old are they\, who invented them? \nCome with us as we journey from Arnulf’s headland to the wolf valley\, via the beaver stream! \nWe explore the place-names of North West England (and especially south Westmorland and north Lancashire) and discover what place-names reveal about medieval society. \nDr Alan Crosby is a freelance local and regional historian\, writer\, editor and lecturer\, working mainly in the North West. Alan has delivered a number of impressive talks to our society and we hope you can join us for this year’s event. \nPrice\n£10.00 \nBooking\nEmail \nPrice includes refreshments. Non-members welcome. \nLearn more about Kirkby Lonsdale & District Civic Society at their website.

SUMMARY:Dark Skies and Stargazing
DESCRIPTION:Cumbria’s dark skies allow us to see the natural wonder of the stars\, but are also critical for the health wildlife and our own natural well-being. Sadly light pollution in Cumbria is increasing each year\, threatening to obscure our view of the stars and blinding and confusing animals so they can’t feed or find a mate. We need urgent action now to stop light pollution. Stargazers\, photographers\, wildlife lovers and local communities. \nJoin Project Officer Jack Ellerby at St Mary’s Church for a talk about the value of Dark Skies and the impact of light pollution on wildlife\, environment and people. Jack leads Hedges and Edges and Dark Skies projects across Cumbria\, inspiring landowners\, communities\, businesses and organisations to help restore the natural world (on land and in the sky!). \nAfter a break for refreshments\, we’ll then head to the Glebe for a spot of star gazing with Mike Armstrong\, chair of Eddington Astronomical Society as well as Lancaster and Morecambe AS. In the event of inclement weather\, Mike will project the night sky indoors and hold a virtual stargazing session! \nPlease dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear suitable for the field’s terrain. This event promises an engaging blend of science and celestial beauty\, offering an opportunity to connect with the universe in a serene setting. Don’t miss this inspiring evening under the stars! \nPrices\nFREE \nTickets\nReserve your place → \nAlthough this is a free event\, to secure your place please register using the link above. Doors Open at 7:15pm. Talk/Q&A at 7:30pm. Refreshments at 8:30pm. Stargazing 9pm onwards. \nPart of Illuminate Festival of Ideas\, 8-23 February
