We’re facing challenges that require creative solutions at a global\, national and local level. SUMMARY:Tour of St Mary's Church
DESCRIPTION:with Tess Pike\nAn illuminating tour of St Mary’s Church \nThe early story of Kirkby Lonsdale’s Parish Church is lost in the mists of time\, but one thing is certain: when Norse Settlers arrived in the 10th century\, there was already a church on the site. The earliest fragments of evidence may be Saxon\, and stones from earlier buildings will certainly have been reused when today’s church started rising on the site from the early 1100s onwards. \nWhen you enter the church\, you can’t fail to notice the impressive\, decorated piers at the west end\, or the strikingly beautiful window at the East End\, but join Tess Pike\, Blue Badge Tourist Guide\, on a guided tour of St Mary’s to see the church in a new light. \nPlease book tickets for this event as numbers are capped at 20. If you book and find you can’t attend\, please let us know so we can fill your place. \nTickets\nAdults £5\nMembers £4\nU18s FREE\nPassholders FREE \nBook online → \nFREE to attend but booking is essential. \n\nThis event is part of the Illuminate Festival. SUMMARY:Grasmere Gingerbread Pop Up Shop
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to sample and buy some famous Grasmere Gingerbread – a mouth-watering spicy-sweet cross between a biscuit and a cake. \nFor Valentines Day we have additional products for collection\, only if you pre-order: Our Grasmere Gingerbread® Valentine’s Day Large Naked Heart\, as well as our Traditional Presentation Tins\, which comes with the choice of either 4 or 6 small hearts \nTo pre-order\, please call 015394 35428 before 2pm on Friday 13th February. \nGrasmere Gingerbread\nGrasmere Gingerbread® was invented in 1854 by Victorian creator cook Sarah Nelson who mixed and baked her spicy-sweet chewy concoction inside her neat Church Cottage home – now The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop – and sold it to villagers and visitors from a table top on a tree stump outside her front door. \nNeither a biscuit nor a cake\, but somewhere in between\, no-one had ever tasted anything quite like it before. Whilst she did not at first give up her regular work at Dale Lodge\, Sarah began selling slices of Grasmere Gingerbread® wrapped in parchment to villagers and tourists outside her neat home. \nOfficially registered as ‘None Genuine Without Trademark’\, the launch of Grasmere Gingerbread® coincided with the development and expansion of the railways and the boom in Victorian visitors to the Lake District. \nWithin a few years its reputation had reached nearly every corner of the country and with the advent of the steam railways tourists flocked to Grasmere to buy her succulent invention. \nHer wonderful spicy-sweet cross between a biscuit and cake enjoys a worldwide following and it is still baked fresh every day to her secret recipe inside her former home\, now The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop.

SUMMARY:Limestone in our Landscape
DESCRIPTION:with Carolina Goodship\nOur landscape is defined by its underlying geology and the processes that shape the hills and valleys. \nKirkby Lonsdale is largely built on limestone bedrock which is thought to have formed around 345 to 330 million years ago during a time when the UK was just south of the equator and a warm shallow tropical sea extended across northern Britain. Many of the town’s buildings are made of limestone blocks\, sourced nearby from long since abandoned small quarries. Look closely and you’ll see that some have fossils. These are fantastic examples of life that once thrived in the shallow sea. \nJoin us on a geological journey to discover how limestone has shaped the character of the town. The walk will start at Devil’s Bridge where we will take a close look at the limestone outcrops near the bridge and hopefully find some fossils. We will then walk along the riverbank\, up Mill Brow and finish at St Mary’s Church. \nCarolina Goodship worked for many years as an engineering geologist in the construction industry. Since settling in Kirkby Lonsdale\, Carolina has become an active member of the Westmorland Geological Society and volunteers for Cumbria GeoConservation. The latter organisation monitors around 300 special geological sites across the county\, one of which are limestone rocks at the Devil’s Bridge. \nTickets\nFREE but please reserve your place as numbers are capped at 16. If you book and find you can’t attend\, please let us know so we can fill your place. \nReserve Place → \nFREE to attend but booking is essential. \n\nThis event is part of the Illuminate Festival.
