Gilbert and debuted in January 1887. \nSet in the Cornish fishing village of Rederrin\, where a witches curse has been placed on the Baronets of Ruddigore which forces them to commit a crime every day. Each previous Baronet has tired of the curse and died in agony. To escape his fate the genuine Baronet\, Ruthven Murgatroyd\, has absconded leaving his younger brother Despard to inherit the title and curse. \nMeanwhile Ruthven\, masquerading as Robin Oakapple\, has been courting Rose\, a young girl from the village. However\, Robin’s extreme shyness prevents him from asking her hand in marriage when his foster-brother\, Richard arrives and offers to help. Unfortunately he inadvertently asks for Roses hand in marriage and she accepts! The engagment is short-lived and Rose calls it off. Richard informs Sir Despard that his elder brother is still alive\, which comes as great relief to the Baronet. Sir Despard has been commiting his crimes early in the morning in order to do good works for the rest of the day in order to make up and the opportunity to be released from the curse is too strong. \nThe new baronet reluctantly takes up residence in the castle\, but will he be able to keep the ancestral ghosts happy who want him to commit ever worse deeds? Will he ever marry Rose? Will Despard be able to atone for his years of crime? SUMMARY:Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band announce their annual Spring Concert to be held at St Mary’s Church. \nKirkby Lonsdale Brass Band is one of the oldest bands in the country. Our earliest record is from 1821 when the band played for the coronation celebrations of King George IV. \nThey led the procession for the coronation celebrations of Queen Victoria in 1838 and escorted Queen Adelaide\, widow of William IV into the town on her visit in 1840.  \nIn 1936 they played for the\, then\, Prince of Wales on his visit to Kirkby Lonsdale and on the occasion of Prince Charles’s visit in 1993. \nIn January 2025 the band welcomed new Musical Director Robert Walker. \nThe band is self supporting. Funds are raised from engagements\, fund raising events and from our Patrons Fund. The band appreciates the excellent support from Patrons\, townspeople and local businesses. \nWe are a friendly band and run beginners classes on request. We have a wide range of players and are always pleased to welcome new members whether new or experienced players.  \nWe welcome anyone to come and play or watch and listen to our rehearsals at Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club\, Mondays 7:30pm – 9:30pm.  \nPlease message us on thekirkbylonsdalebrassband@gmail.com for more details. \nPrices\nAdults £10\nU18s FREE \nTickets\nPlease buy tickets on the door\, or beforehand at the Town Information Centre on Main Street.

DESCRIPTION:The longest-running Scarecrow Festival in the UK (we believe)\, is back for 2025. This year the theme is ‘Circus’ and all activities for the 10 day festival revolve around this\, culminating in the Wray Fair on Bank Holiday Monday\, 5th May. \nOnce again there are a variety of events taking place including 10k road race\, giant scarecrow parade\, car boot\, fell race\, local history walks and not forgetting the Wray Fair with entertainment and fun for all the family and\, of course\, lots of scarecrows! \nThe Festival began in 1992\, inspired by a similar event in France. It is organised each year by the ‘Scarecrow Committee’\, a small but dedicated band of local volunteers. The festivities start at 8pm.On Saturday\, 10 May there will be afternoon tea and the premiere of the new film by local filmmaker John Hamlett\, “Remembering Kirkby in Wartime“. \nThis is a free event\, however booking is required. Please call Pat France on 015242 71740 or 07887 940442. \nFilming memoirs is John’s speciality and a passion. He graduated in documentary arts in 1996\, where his degree projects focused on personal histories – the sort of stories people tell\, rather than the sort historians write. Since then he’s spent over 25 years creating digital media and video (www.lunar.co.uk). He has worked on film commissions all over the UK including heritage work for The National Trust and The Yorkshire Festival of Story as well as projects funded by Historic England\, The Lottery Heritage Fund and Yorkshire Dales National Park. I’ve also made short films like The POW that have screened at film festivals from Keswick & Konstanz to Bucharest & Barrie\, winning awards in the UK\, Russia and Canada. \nJohn was responsible for the “Remembering Kirkby Lonsdale” project a few years ago which captures stories of this small market town in the 1930s & ’40s\, as remembered by eight of the town’s oldest residents. Public screenings have entertained hundreds and helped raise thousands for local charities. Together these two films paint a vivid\, humbling and entertaining picture of what life was like before the postwar world changed things forever.

DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Moonrakers run a series of sought-after Folk Orchestra workshops across the country for intermediate instrumentalists who wish to develop skills in arranging and playing folk tunes and songs in an ensemble. \nJoin Jon Bennett (guitar\, ukulele\, bouzouki\, whistles)\, Jacqui Johnson (cello\, fiddle\, keyboard) and Becki Luff (harp\, keyboard) for an inspiring six-hour workshop at Barbon village Hall\, ahead of their concert at St Mary’s Church the same evening. \nYou’ll have the opportunity to work through a number of tunes and songs\, and will be invited to suggest arrangement ideas yourself. Music (with chords\, countermelody and bass) will be sent out in advance along with a video of each tune played at medium pace for those who learn by ear. DESCRIPTION:with Abbi Lawson\nJoin Kirkby Lonsdale Women’s Institute for this talk\,  demonstration and tasting from former Great British Bake-off contestant\, Abbi Lawson. \nAbbi is a forager\, baker and self-proclaimed food experimentalist who recently appeared as a contestant on the Great British Bake Off. Fuelled by the dual passions of food sustainability and finding the divine in nature\, Abbi can usually be found deep in a patch of brambles\, climbing a tree to reach a flush of mushrooms\, or spending three days designing and creating a woodland grove-themed birthday cake (for herself). When she’s not busy foraging\, Abbi works for a veg grower’s co-operative\, and loves to experiment with novel ways to flavour cakes and desserts with seasonal and locally grown vegetables.
