SUMMARY:Kirkby Lonsdale Celebrates VE Day
DESCRIPTION:Lunesdale Hall Committee have organised two events to help Kirkby Lonsdale celebrate VE Day. \nOn Thursday\, 8 May a Beacon will be lit on the playfield at 9pm. There will be food\, drink and music available (courtesy of Little Barn). The festivities start at 8pm.On Saturday\, 10 May there will be afternoon tea and the premiere of the new film by local filmmaker John Hamlett\, “Remembering Kirkby in Wartime“. \nThis is a free event\, however booking is required. Please call Pat France on 015242 71740 or 07887 940442. \nFilming memoirs is John’s speciality and a passion. He graduated in documentary arts in 1996\, where his degree projects focused on personal histories – the sort of stories people tell\, rather than the sort historians write. Since then he’s spent over 25 years creating digital media and video (www.lunar.co.uk). He has worked on film commissions all over the UK including heritage work for The National Trust and The Yorkshire Festival of Story as well as projects funded by Historic England\, The Lottery Heritage Fund and Yorkshire Dales National Park. I’ve also made short films like The POW that have screened at film festivals from Keswick & Konstanz to Bucharest & Barrie\, winning awards in the UK\, Russia and Canada. \nJohn was responsible for the “Remembering Kirkby Lonsdale” project a few years ago which captures stories of this small market town in the 1930s & ’40s\, as remembered by eight of the town’s oldest residents. Public screenings have entertained hundreds and helped raise thousands for local charities. Together these two films paint a vivid\, humbling and entertaining picture of what life was like before the postwar world changed things forever.

SUMMARY:Hedgerow Baking
DESCRIPTION:with Abbi Lawson\nJoin Kirkby Lonsdale Women’s Institute for this talk\,  demonstration and tasting from former Great British Bake-off contestant\, Abbi Lawson. \nAbbi is a forager\, baker and self-proclaimed food experimentalist who recently appeared as a contestant on the Great British Bake Off. Fuelled by the dual passions of food sustainability and finding the divine in nature\, Abbi can usually be found deep in a patch of brambles\, climbing a tree to reach a flush of mushrooms\, or spending three days designing and creating a woodland grove-themed birthday cake (for herself). When she’s not busy foraging\, Abbi works for a veg grower’s co-operative\, and loves to experiment with novel ways to flavour cakes and desserts with seasonal and locally grown vegetables. Her stint on the Bake Off solidified her love for finding meaning in food and baking\, and exploring the ways in which the food we eat connects us to the place and planet that we call home. \nNon-members\, including men\, and members from other WI branches are welcome. \nLearn more about the Kirkby Lonsdale Women’s Institute at www.klwi.co.uk \nPrice\n£5.00\nPay on the door

SUMMARY:Steel
DESCRIPTION:A town-wide treasure hunt for a million quid of lost railway is led by the wild hearts of two teenage boys in Steel\, a punchy\, high octane new play by Lee Mattinson set in post-industrial West Cumbria. \nSteel is set in Workington\, once rich with coal seams and ore\, carnivals and community\, where James and Kamran have been mates for over a decade. They are fed up with feeling different\, and at seventeen\, they’d like the world to be theirs – but Workington feels like a ghost town. Unemployment is double the national average\, and ‘lasses drink Bacardi by the pint and boys don’t cry’. \nA strange phone call from ‘Lynn from London’ summons James and Kamran to meet her in a local cafe. She informs James that he’s heir to ‘one theoretical mile’ of the British Railway System\, secured in 1903 by his Great-Great-Great-Grandfather. Lynn explains that if James can deliver the contract proving this in time\, he will receive a million pounds. And so the town-wide treasure hunt for the lost contract begins in a flurry of remarkable wild characters\, hidden histories and brave first love. \n“…a real tribute to the spirit of Workington and should be treasured…”\nNorthern Arts Review \n‘Steel’ is commissioned and produced by Theatre by the Lake (TBTL)\, and directed by TBTL Artistic Director Liz Stevenson. \nTickets\n£12 per person \nBooking\nBook online → \nOr by call Matt on 07531 143762 \nContent warning: This show includes strong language\, descriptions of violence\, sex\, homophobia and racism. Suitable for ages 14+ \nDue to the size of the performance space\, ticket numbers will be limited\, so buy early to avoid disappointment! \nPresented with the generous help of Highlights Rural Touring Scheme

SUMMARY:Miss Nobodies
DESCRIPTION:Miss Nobodies is a funny\, uplifting play about a little ironmongers shop in a little Lancashire town and the larger-than-life women who pass through it from 1919 to the present day. \nMixing storytelling with sketches\, songs and poetry\, Ruth Cockburn and Keith Carter (the creative talent behind last year’s hilarious ‘Devilled Eggs’ show) take you through 100 years of retail therapy and stories; the talkie movies of the ‘20s and the video nasties of the 80’s\, the start of 50’s Skiffle and the birth of 90’s Britpop\, class struggles in the ‘60’s and racial tension in the ‘70’s. \nPlaying a host of characters\, from the tragic to the comical to the lyrical and the animal\, their stories\, sketches\, songs and verse\, (there’s even a prize-winning competition in the interval)\, will have you laughing\, crying and singing up to the present day. \nThis funny\, poignant and heart-warming story will resonate with all ages and will make you think about what the next 100 years will hold for us. Miss Nobodies was inspired by outreach done online and in the community of Great Harwood alongside research into local history and prominent figures of Lancashire. One such person is Ethel Carnie Holdsworth. A writer that worked in the mills in the early part of the last century. She is cited as the first working class\, female novelist in the UK and parts of her poetry are used throughout the play to punctuate the stories. The show mixes poetry\, storytelling and music\, to tell the story of a local shop spanning 100 years from 1919 to present day\, focusing on the women that have made up the shop’s history\, whilst also showing how the lives of women have changed over the last century. \nBlack Liver\, as heard on BBC Radio 4\, seen on BBC 1 and Sky TV have toured all over the world. They bring their unique style of theatre-making and comedy to connect to their audience and bring stories to life. \n\nNominated for best new show 2022 Buxton Fringe\n‘Iconic’ Forgotten Arts Fest\n‘Highly Recommended’ Buxton Fringe\n\nAudience Reactions\n‘Miss Nobodies – ordinary women\, living extraordinary lives and superbly told this evening. A privilege to have seen this performance. Thought provoking and enjoyable.’ \n‘Loved the show. It really took us on a humorous and emotive journey. Through a familiar history of any Lancashire small town girl.’ \n‘What a wonderful breath of fresh air. Loved this storyline and the way the humour was woven in.’ \nPrices\nAdults £14.00\nU18s £10.00 \nBooking\nBook online → \nDoors open at 6.45pm. Performance begins 7.30pm. Pop-up bar available. SUMMARY:Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band Competition
DESCRIPTION:The annual Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band Contest is being held on Sunday 15 June in the Market Square and continues a tradition that began in 1988 when the band first organised an open air contest which attracted bands from across the North of England. \nThis year’s event begins at 10:30am when the 4 junior bands which are taking part each play a 15- minute programme of music. There is then a short break before the senior bands play\, starting at 12:30pm. \nThis year\, there are 7 bands competing – our own town band along with Pilling\, Burneside\, Lancaster\, Clockface (St. Helens)\, Eccleston and Giggleswick & Settle brass bands. The competing bands march from Beck Head\, along Market Street and Main Street to the town square. After setting up in the square\, each band plays a 20- minute programme of music\, usually containing a march\, an arrangement of a hymn and a selection of other music they have chosen to show off the skills and musicianship of both the band as a whole and individual instrumentalists. \nBands are marked on their deportment whilst marching (but the piece of music they are marching to is not judged) and on their playing in the square. The adjudicator is a well-known authority on band music\, and this year we are very pleased to welcome Matthew Ryan\, who is a member of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators and Musical Director of Wingates Brass Band\, to this role. \nTo close the contest\, after all the competing bands have played but before the results are announced at around 5pm\, the massed bands play marches and hymns\, conducted by the musical director of one of the competing bands. \nIn addition to the afternoon’s music\, a raffle will also be held during the contest\, with prizes very kindly donated by local businesses\, organisations and individuals. The band would like to thank everyone for their generosity in supporting the band in this way – it is greatly appreciated. \nThis is a very enjoyable\, entertaining and free event\, so we would love to see a big audience gathered in the square to listen to a varied programme of brass band music. \nFor the latest information please visit the Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band Facebook.
