With Summer on its way we look forward to June, as a fantastic Month of Music, packed with lots of live musical events in venues throughout town.
Hot on the heels of the Taste of Cumbria and Beer Festivals, our first offering is the Kirkby Lonsdale Festival of Music held on the weekend of 7 to 9 June in venues throughout the town. Now in its sixth year, the 2019 Festival will offer a weekend full of live musical delights. We are extremely fortunate to have so many talented musicians and bands living in and around Kirkby Lonsdale and this wealth of talent will be reflected in the weekend’s range of performances.
The Festival of Music includes two larger events. The Big Indoor Picnic takes place on Friday, 7 June with local band AlFresco providing a soundtrack to a bring your own drink and picnic. This promises, as usual, to be a hugely enjoyable evening of dancing in a bistro style environment. Picnicers can celebrate 'Carnival' as the theme this year, by decorating their tables, dressing up or any way they see fit!
The Best of British - From Byrd to the Beatles at St Mary's Church on Saturday, 8 June will be a gala concert celebrating centuries of wonderful British music. Come and enjoy an evening of great British musical favourites; spanning the glories of the English Renaissance, to the melodies of modern day pop icons.
After the Festival closes there will be plenty of music throughout the Town at various venues, for which you will find full details here on our website. For example, The Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band Competition returns on Sunday, 16 June with an outstanding selection of Brass Bands competing once again. This is always a popular event, you really can't beat a bit of brass!
Later in the month between Friday and Sunday 28–30 June the All Britain Fleadh visits Kirkby Lonsdale. This is a hugely presitigious event in Irish music circles and is the first time the competition has ever visited a town. Everyone in Kirkby Lonsdale is really looking forward to this one, as the Town will be taken over by musicians from far and wide competing and performing in venues around Kirkby lonsdale. Approximately 600 of the best musicians in Britain will compete, from under tens, to experienced seniors taking part in 49 contests in five age groups, in a total of 245 competitions!
Not only is the All Britain Fleadh a competion, it is alsoa Festival, and there will be concerts and events happening over the weekend also. On Friday, 28 June there will be a Super Céilí with reigning with All-Ireland champions The Blackwater Céilí Band at Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club. This should be a riotous mix of music and dancing – not to be missed!
Up and coming (and award-winning) Scottish folk band Talisk will be performing at St Mary's Church on Saturday, 29 June. Talisk are highly regarded as one of the finest folk bands in the country and we are thrilled to welcome them to our small town! In their five years, these Scottish firebrands have stacked up several major awards for their explosively energetic yet artfully woven sound, including 2018’s Belhaven Bursary for Innovation & 2017’s Folk Band of the Year both at the BBC Alba Scots Trad Music Awards, and a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award.
