SUMMARY:Tour of St Mary's Church
DESCRIPTION:with Tess Pike\nAn illuminating tour of St Mary’s Church \nThe early story of Kirkby Lonsdale’s Parish Church is lost in the mists of time\, but one thing is certain: when Norse Settlers arrived in the 10th century\, there was already a church on the site. The earliest fragments of evidence may be Saxon\, and stones from earlier buildings will certainly have been reused when today’s church started rising on the site from the early 1100s onwards. \nWhen you enter the church\, you can’t fail to notice the impressive\, decorated piers at the west end\, or the strikingly beautiful window at the East End\, but join Tess Pike\, Blue Badge Tourist Guide\, on a guided tour of St Mary’s to see the church in a new light. \nPlease book tickets for this event as numbers are capped at 20. If you book and find you can’t attend\, please let us know so we can fill your place. \nTickets\nAdults £5\nMembers £4\nU18s FREE\nPassholders FREE \nBook online → \nFREE to attend but booking is essential. \n\nThis event is part of the Illuminate Festival.
DESCRIPTION:Two Ghost Stories by M R James\, expertly performed by R M Lloyd Parry\n‘… Parkins\, who very much dislikes being questioned about it\, did once describe something of it in my hearing\, and I gathered that what he chiefly remembers is a horrible\, an intensely horrible\, face of crumpled linen. What expression he read upon it he could not or would not tell\, but that the fear of it went nigh to maddening him is certain …’ \nOver a century after their first publication\, the ghost stories of M R James retain their power to terrify and amuse. \nOh\, Whistle\, and I’ll Come to You\, My Lad – a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast – is considered by many to be author’s masterpiece. It is beautifully complemented here by The Ash Tree\, a story of witchcraft and vengeance down the generations. \nWARNING: CONTAINS MOMENTS OF PLEASING TERROR \n‘Lloyd Parry was utterly hypnotic\, holding the audience in thrall…’\nThe Orcadian \nRead an article by Robert Lloyd Parry about the original illustrations for ‘Oh\, Whistle…’ here. \nA filmed performance of “Oh\, Whistle…” and a documentary about the background to the story can be purchased here. \nR L Parry website: https://www.nunkie.co.uk/the-mr-james-project \n  \nTickets\nAdults £15\nU18s £10\nMembers £13.50 \nDoors Open at 6:45pm.
