Kirkby Lonsdale Chamber of Trade

How it all started…

The Kirkby Lonsdale Chamber of Trade was originally established in 1957 and, after a six year lapse from 1969, was reinvented in 1975 by a small group of town business people who recognised that the combined efforts of like-minded people who had  similar business goals and limited marketing resources would have a more powerful effect than their own disparate individual efforts. This broad-minded thinking led to many initiatives over the years. For example, the Victorian Fair Weekend  which was a one-off event in 1980 and went on to help define the town until it ended in 2008. The Christmas Fair which runs on the first weekend in December is an event which is still run by the Chamber of Trade to this day.

Events like these draw people to Kirkby Lonsdale for an entertainment filled weekend, leaving visitors with a very positive impression of the town and an appetite to return at other times of the year.

How it works…

A meeting is held on the first Monday of every month, occasionally this arrangement is altered to take account of Public Holidays etc. Since January 2007 the Chamber has been run by an elected committee of individuals. Ordinary members are welcome to attend any monthly meetings in order to view the workings of the committee and to raise any items for the agenda during the meeting. An agenda is circulated a few days before each meeting and minutes are produced and circulated to all members by email (or hard copy to those who prefer) a few days after each meeting. The next meeting date is always confirmed in the preceeding month’s minutes in case it varies from the first Monday principle. The Chamber AGM is held in January each year at which officials are voted into position and membership rates are set.

In the main subscriptions are collected in January by standing order, memberships run from January to December each year.

What does it cost?

Rates are agreed at AGM 12 months ahead of implementation. New members joining part way through the year will be invoiced pro rata the number of months remaining. Existing members paying late will be charged at the full yearly rate.

Discounts for membership of more than one business: 2 businesses -10%, 3 businesses -15%, 4 businesses -20%, 5 or more -25%
