Clarence Webb & Co: Horticulturalists of Kendal

Clarence Webb & Co. with Richard Pealing 21 October 2026

with Richard Pealing

This fascinating local history talk offers a nostalgic journey through the heritage of one of Cumbria’s most celebrated historic nursery firms. Pealing will trace the multi-generational family legacy of the business from its founder, Clarence Webb, down to his nephew Jimmy and grand-nephew Geoffrey, highlighting their immense impact on regional trade and the Cumbrian community.

Attendees will discover the changing landscape of Kendal’s town center through the lens of the company’s landmark locations. Pealing will explore the history of the bustling Clarence Webb Horticultural Stores shop on Highgate, alongside the firm’s two prominent nurseries: the Burneside Road site (where the Magistrates’ Court now stands) and the Library Road nursery (now the site of Marks & Spencer). Legendary across the county for their sprawling rose groves and vibrant dahlias, the Webb family dominated local horticultural shows and supplied almost all the secondary florists in the area with high-quality cut flowers.

Beyond plants and commerce, the talk reveals captivating historical intersections, including how Clarence Webb acted as a vital mentor to Joseph Hardman. Webb’s early encouragement of the famous freelance photographer for The Westmorland Gazette helped launch a career that beautifully documented Cumbrian life for decades. Doors open for what promises to be an enriching evening for gardening enthusiasts and local history buffs alike.

All welcome.
