Lime in Our Built Environment

10.00am-12.00pm. Presentation: A traveller’s guide to understanding the role of lime in traditional buildings, its use in mortars, renders, plasters and limewashes, historical production in the locality, how traditional mortars work, why modern materials can cause problems in old buildings, embracing the lime lifestyle, sources of further information.
12.00pm-1.30pm. Demonstration: Introduction to lime in various forms, health and safety issues, the importance of sand, mixing mortars, preparing walls for pointing and rendering, applying and finishing pointing, preparation and aftercare.
The practical demonstration in the churchyard will take place on grassed areas with uneven ground. Some weather protection may be available, but weather-proof clothing is recommended. There will be an opportunity for hands-on participation, so ‘messy’ clothing is recommended. Basic goggles and gloves will be provided, through participants may wish to bring their own. For safety reasons the number of participants will be limited to 12.
