Talk : Life between the cracks

Life Between the Cracks - 28 October © Thomas Langmead

with Scott Petrek

Step onto what feels like a lunar landscape right in our own backyard. Punctuated by deep, mysterious cracks and hollows, the UK’s limestone pavements are one of our most unusual and vital natural habitats. But what actually lives deep inside these rocky crevices?

Join us in the Bective Room at Lunesdale Hall for an illuminating, beautifully illustrated evening with Scott Petrek, Reserves Officer at Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Scott will guide us through the extraordinary ecology of our local pavements—including nearby treasures like Hutton Roof Crags. Discover the unique communities of rare ferns, wildflowers, and insects that thrive in the microclimates of the “grikes” (cracks), learn about the major conservation milestones that saved these habitats from destruction, and find out what the future holds for their protection.

Whether you are a seasoned walker, a nature enthusiast, or simply curious about the geology that shapes Kirkby Lonsdale, this talk will change the way you look at our local fells.

Tea & biscuits available, suggested donation £3.

Hosted by Cumbria Wildlife Trust Kirkby Lonsdale Local Group.
